ASCENSION CHAPLAINCY affirms the New Testament doctrine of Justification by
Faith: the restoration of our relationship with God where man is made just (the
legal definition) or free from guilt or penalty of sin. (Romans 3:28) In the
1700’s John Wesley, spoke of God’s “prevenient” love as the freely offered— no
strings attached— grace- full gift of God by which we, through the simple act of
acceptance (faith) are assured forgiveness and reconciliation. (Romans 3:23-25)
Historically man has been uncomfortable feeling he needed to win God’s favor
through a list of supposed duties and obligations; a frustrating, guilt
producing task. Periodically man needs to be reminded that when he accepts God’s
grace (Ephesians 2:8,9) he becomes justified (free from guilt or penalty of
sin). He is assured of forgiveness and, only then, led into new spiritual
dimensions.
Thus we believe that God’s punishments are redemptive rather than punitive and
we trust in the justice and the freely offered love of the Creator/Redeemer who
cares for all who, by grace, go home to their God.
